To the family of sweet Joan, may you know that just because her physical body is gone home, does not mean that her memories are gone, God used her to make a contribution to this world, a contribution of sweetness, of kindness, of love, which will not be forgotten. May these few words comfort you, but we do know the only true comforter is God. So may you always know that Joans living was not in vain, and that it was complete. what God sent her here to do she did, a daughhter , a sister, a mother, a friend.

You always had a place in your heart for everybody. Your love, generosity and God-fearing ways were very contagious and had a profound effect on the few people that had the opportunity to know you personally. Most of the time that we stayed together or spoke on the phone you always advised us to strengthen our faith in God, humble ourselves and be merciful to those who may have hurt us whether knowingly or unknowingly. Although you were kind, some people took advantage of your kindness but you remained kind anyway. Although you were softhearted, some people took advantage of this, yet you remained softhearted anyway. Finally, although you were so humble no matter what happened around you, you stayed true to yourself and your ways. On earth, you may have completed your course but your legacy of love still prevails. Your departure has left a huge void because we would not be able to physically hear your voice, share your laughter or feel your touch. But we will hold on to the good memories we shared and continue to strengthen our faith in the Almighty Father because the love of God never fails. We thank God that He placed you in our lives and path, and we thank you personally for your good deeds and the great love you portrayed on earth. You represent love so we will not mourn you forever but we will celebrate your life forever. We will always love you, big sister. Rest in perfect peace until we meet again to part no more and may the Lord accept you into His kingdom.

Story shared: How Does She Stand the Smoke?

I first remember meeting Aunty Joan in my last trip to Cameroon. Fifteen years ago, she came to my father’s town in Kumba. She was the tall woman who moved with poise and grace. She was the woman who practically lived in the outdoor kitchen in my grandmother’s house. I would visit her during sunny days in this kitchen. I sat on a stool across from her over a pot and we talked about a variety of topics, such as her aching fingers that worsened with cutting cassava and how to make “puff-puff”. During our conversations, I realized that the smoke and the ashes from cooking were too much for me to bear. I would run away from the kitchen and stand outside. Then, I would turn back and realize that Aunty Joan was still in the kitchen. “How do you deal with the smoke?!”

I was baffled by her reaction: a coy and downward smile illuminating her precious cheekbones greeted my eyes. She said, “Mama, I’m used to this.”

As God allows me to continue on this path of life, times will arise in which I say, “The smoke is too much. I need to escape.” However, I will always think of how you dealt with the smoke (both in the kitchen and in life). I will remember your unassuming manners and your smile.

When you saw my tearful reaction to the last smoke, you said that crying would not solve anything. While I still shed tears for you, I hold dear to the lessons you have taught me and smile at the sweet memories we shared. Aunty Joan, I will get used to your new address in Heaven.
